Said on the radio this morning that Lembit Opik MP is to wed Cheeky Girl Gabriela Irimia after proposing to her by the Trevi Fountain while on holiday in Rome.

Loved the 'while on holiday in Rome' bit, Radio 2.

I'm sure many listeners thought Mr Opik had popped the question in front of said fountain during a weekend in Blackpool.

French & Saunders: Still Alive
Liverpool Empire; Wednesday, April 16

Did you see the post-credits scene of this week's Shameless? If so, good - because that makes this review a lot easier to write.

I love, love, love French and Saunders. Right from when I was not quite a teenager and their Thursday night BBC2 show parodied all the things a young person finds it important to dislike; Blue Peter, Sonia and Bros.

This was the first time I had seen Dawn and Jen live on stage (it's quite strange, being in the same room - albeit a huge one - as someone from the telly) and it was a show I'd looked forward to for a long time.

That was Rather Unexpected

Promised myself a while back that I would root out a copy of Roald Dahl's short stories - and my big sister bought me a copy of his Tales of the Unexpected for Christmas.

With the car back in the garage for some tweaks to its recent repairs, the train journey from Liverpool to Southport has finally given me the time (and excuse) to be thoroughly anti-social and wedge my nose between the covers of a cracking good read.

Hats off to BBC Four for a brilliant season of biopics about the tragedy behind the smiles of so many of Britain's most endearing comics.

The Curse of Steptoe and Son was ghoulishly fascinating, as was Trevor Eve's intriguing portrayal of Hughie Green. But the drama with the loudest fanfare appeared this week, with Little Britain's David Walliams stepping into unfamiliar territory to recreate the iconic look and ways of the late Frankie Howerd.

The Southport Redskins

I do not like bananas, I never have.

There is something about the texture, the consistency, the taste - in fact, the entire banana experience - which has always made me wretch.

However, I think its important to include a 'nana in your diet as that texture, consistency and taste does mask nutrients which are rather good for you.

And now I may have found the answer.

Several supermarkets are now stocking Red Bananas. They are of Colombian origin and the same dusky shade as a sweet potato. A tad pricey (the tiny bunch we got from Morrison's were £1.99), I can happily report that the experience of eating this wasn't traumatic in the slightest. My tastebuds didn't exactly go zing, but I can live with that.

This could be the start of beautiful, fruitiful relationship.

I Predict a Riot

As I was driving in to work this morning, what should waft out the radio but the new single from Ben's Brother.

Called 'Stuttering (Kiss Me Again)', it's all about a gentleman who stumbles on his consonants whenever he thinks about that certain lady in his life. Indeed, he stumbles on said consonants throughout the song.

I thought it was quite a nifty little tune, and just the right shade of quirky. But something tells me a host of easily offended types are now going to be outraged on behalf of speech impediment sufferers everywhere.

Probably a lot more offended than the sufferers themselves.

Time Lords don't... do they?

Lots of interesting stuff in today's news sites about the launch of the fourth series of Doctor Who, with the first episode on BBC One this Saturday.

Although the third series was a good 'un (the two-parter about the Doctor having to become human and Blink - the one with the stone angels - were slices of Who usually reserved for the top table), I am far more excited about the prospect of this new series than I was at the same time last year.

Heavy Suds Vehicle

This is a very sad admission, but on Sunday I did something I have never, ever done in my 31 years on this Earth.

I took my car through a (proper - the automated kind) car wash.

There was a reason behind it. My car conked out in spectacular style in Crosby a fortnight ago, and I finally got her back, all fixed and good as new, on Saturday afternoon.

As she had had a sore engine, and must have been very bored in the garage car park without my iPod plugged in to her, I thought it only fair to give her a special treat, so off we tooted to the nearest automated car wash.

It was great fun.
