I have discovered the superbness (is that a word?) of Channel Four's Shameless a lot later than most.
It never appealed to me when it first hit our screens about four years ago - and I once interviewed a (nameless) Shameless cast member whose self-importance was so overwhelming it put me off the show even further.
But that's all in the past. I've finally succumbed to its salt-of-the-earth charms, however, and I'm glad.
In last night's show, Paddy Maguire - the scariest man on the Chatsworth Estate - faced a 20 year spell at Our Liz's pleasure after being caught fair and square on CCTV during a raid on a pharmacy.
Just the sort of situation you wouldn't expect anyone to get out of, Paddy managed to do exactly that.
How? In a fiendish plot involving his gay twin brother (whom he loathed) a bottle of Scotch and a return visit to the chemist in this season's must-have balaclavas. That's how.
Brilliantly written and performed, what surprised me this morning when I typed 'Shameless' in to Wikipedia to see what I had been missing, and who played who, was how one of the actors had appeared in another of my favourite shows.
It also leads to a rather pointless piece of trivia:
Paddy Maguire, as played by actor Sean Gilder, in the Channel 4 series Shameless. His character was in a raid where someone threatened to cut a chemist's hand off.
The Sycorax Leader, as played by actor Sean Gilder, in the BBC1 series Doctor Who. His character was in a fight on top of a raiding spaceship where he cut the Doctor's hand off.
Honestly, you'd think these writers would get more original ideas...
