It wasn't to be for Southport's Aimee Kearsley in this Saturday's Eurovision-Your Decision preliminary.
Aimee and her LoveShy bandmate Emma Beard won't be flying the Union flag in Belgrade on May 24, but perhaps that's a good thing.
I'm sure they're great girls, but their live performance was a tad nervy and shaky in a studio of about 200 people. Putting them in front of 20,000 at the cavernous Belgrade Arena would have just been cruel - and a potential nil-pointer for the UK.
The eventual choice - X Factor's Andy Abraham - is a good one, but not necessarily an inspired one.
What Britain does have on her side is Andy's effortless singing and performance abilities - something the UK entrant hasnm't always been blessed with in recent years.
Eurovision history is littered with tales of songs which sound a tad flat in the studio version (the Danish and Estonian winners of 2000 and 2001 spring to mind) but came alive on the big night with assured performers behind the mic.
I doubt Andy's song, Even If, will be the UK's sixth Eurovision victor, but 'even if' (did you see what I did there...) we finish last - at least it won't be with a pile of nonsense about buying gin from an air steward's duty free trolley.
At least it wasn't Michelle Gayle, whose song was frankly ludicrous. But I'd have preferred The Revelations...
