I haven't seen it for years, and I can't pretend it's a show I'd set the video for, but there is something very sad about the passing of Grange Hill.
One of my earliest TV memories is of a posh lad falling off a roof while bunking off, and some grown-ups on the ground rushing to help him.
Then there was uber-cool Precious Matthews and her unfortunate attempt at hairdressing in the girls' changing room, Row-land Browning getting run over, the time I was convinced I heard token Scouser Ziggy Greaves saying a very naughty word offscreen, and the impressionable 10-year-old me being rather scared as a post-OD Zammo Maguire was found by his mates and the programme ended without the usual cod-reggae theme tune.
Of course, watching today's version of 'the Hill' as a man in his early 30s is a painful experience. The pupils look about six years old, and I miss Mrs McCluskey, insisting that the school magazine will 'not have a pullout poster of Shakin' Stevens in it'.
Still, at least we had Grange Hill for 30 years.
It's just means that, after Brookside being axed, that's one fewer employment opportunity for the actors getting too old for Hollyoaks.
