I thought our telly treats would go a bit flat after the festive period, but there was a surprise nugget tucked away in the schedules last night.
I had never seen The Others when it was in cinemas, nor caught it on video or DVD afterwards, so reserved myself a 90 minute speck on the sofa to enjoy the spooky tale for the first time.
It's so good to see a film with no CGI trickery to create ghostly images. This was done with suggestion, noise, the odd shaking chandelier, and some suitably eerie photographs.
With absolutely no knowledge of the twist in the tale, I was convinced Nicole Kidman was, in fact, completely off her trolley and the only ghosts existed in the paranoid minefield of her conscience.
A good story, well-told, and - lo and behold - even Eric Sykes showed up as a gardener.
Marvellous stuff.
