The Full Montenegro

Montenegro

This internet mullarkey truly is a wonderful thing, and especially at this time of year.

Thanks to super-fast connections and webcasts, it means that card-carrying fans of that Song Contest called Eurovision can have a sneaky peek at how countries around the continent deal with choosing their representative for the great big musical bun fight in May.

And last night, I could watch those newly independent Montenegrins having a crack at it, all from the comfort of our spare room.

The BBC certainly knows how to cling to a semi-successful concept.

After their jaunts in adapting the works of Chaucer and Shakespeare in to modern environs, this time around, they have turned their attentions to fairy tales.

Last week there was a brilliant twist on Cinderella, with Maxine Peake as the university cleaner who desperately wanted a plum research assistant job with an arrogant professor.

Last night (Thursday) it was the turn of the Emperor's New Clothes.

For the second time in seven days, the 10,000-strong crowd at the Echo Arena were brought to their feet for a rendition of The Farm's All Together Now.

Last week it was all about the launch of the Capital of Culture, but this Saturday was a celebration of just how good Scousers are at topping the charts.

A Tale of Two Ceremonies

"I THINK you're going to be in the minority there, it was a load of rubbish."

So said an extremely opinionated woman in a white fur coat, desperate to collar whoever crossed her path in a Liverpool city centre pub, to tell them how little she thought of that evening's Capital of Culture launch at St George's Hall.

As you can gather, when collared, we told her how much we had enjoyed the spectacle.

It's January 8

And I've just seen a woman walking down Lord Street in Southport with two carrier bags full of Easter Eggs.

Happy New Year.

And An Others Thing

I thought our telly treats would go a bit flat after the festive period, but there was a surprise nugget tucked away in the schedules last night.

I had never seen The Others when it was in cinemas, nor caught it on video or DVD afterwards, so reserved myself a 90 minute speck on the sofa to enjoy the spooky tale for the first time.
