I Believe the Phrase is 'Squee'

I can be a bit curmudgeonly about words and phrases which originate from the internet community.

For example, whoever thought up 'LOL' for 'laughs out loud' should be put in a big sack and shook.

It seems to be applied at the end of every other statement on emails and internet forums, whether what's being said is remotely amusing or not ('Butterfield on Peter Serafonowicz, lol!'/'Israel beat Russia, lol!'/'What are you having for tea? lol!'/'An alligator has just bitten my leg off, lol!').

Just stop, please. it's wrong on so many levels (except the bit about Butterfield being funny).

However, I will make one small concession for the word 'squee', a relatively new phrase which also manages to raise my ire.

One 'squees' when something unexpectedly delightful occurs (if my understanding of the phrase is correct). This is also wrong - why can't people just say - 'I liked/enjoyed that'/'I found that unexpectedly delightful'?

I'm glad to say I'm not so miserable that I can't allow some squee in to my life. I've already mentioned how much I'm enjoying The Sarah Jane Adventures, the Doctor Who spin-off for people who aren't in work at 5pm.

Yesterday was the season finale (a phrase, by rights, I should also get ticked off by - but don't for some reason) and although it was a bit of a cop-out, seeing as he hasn't been around for the whole series, robotic super pup K9 emerged from nowhere to save our heroine and her junior helpers in the final climactic moments of the show.

I know I'm 31 years old, I know I should be switching over to BBC News 24 to consider the movers and shakers on the global political front, but when that small piece of my childhood materialised on screen, snout-gun blazing, I have to confess - I squee'd myself.

superb stuff, as ever. I missed K9? Damn! But I would have 'squeed', too! And word has it, both he and lovely Sarah Jane may turn up in the series 4 'season finale', alongside Jack, Rose, Marta, the Master and a certain Mr. Davros. Squeees aplenty in store my end if true..

I thought squee was the sort of thing you said when you saw a mouse in the kitchen - which isn't unexpectedly delightful, except for the cats...
